Introduction

Why Build a Website

I’m sure if you’re here you’ve probably been sold “that dream”.

F*ck The Fake Gurus

Make money in your sleep. The only way to survive now is through “passive income”. Bring your business online to join the “laptop lifestyle”. Making money online is easy all you need to leverage the power of the internet. You’re “wasting” time in your 9-5 and you need to jump on this opportunity right now.

If  you’ve heard these sayings before, the line that usually follows is:

“All you need to do is sign up for my $999 course.”

… Like ya right. Why is your course so expensive if you’re actually making that much money that you’re claiming? Don’t get me wrong there are a ton of ways to “make money online”. But what I’m trying to get across to you is that there is no get-rich-quick. The reason they are called get-rich-quick schemes is cause they are just that, a scheme. Don’t fall for “their” hero close either.

“Just for you, I’ll drop the price to $299 so that you can take advantage of this opportunity today.”

There is no information that they can supply that isn’t already free on the internet. If their prices are that high, chances are the money they are using to flex on you, is made through people buying  their course, so don’t fall for that.

The advantages of going online

What are the advantages of a website?

So why bring the “fake guru’s” up? We’ll if I could save you from falling victim to a get-rich-quick scheme or some kinda MLM, it make me feel a little better about the world.

But with them aside why start a website? Whether you’re an existing business trying to build an online presence or just a solo dude or dudette tryna start a blog. We can’t lie about the impact of how important the internet is. You need to be seen somewhere and a website is usually the answer.

Now if you’re already got a big ass community on another platform its all cool. You don’t necessarily “need” a website but. My thoughts are it’ll be good to have a platform that you can own entirely.

Personal Ownership

“Platform Security”

So in the off chance that one of the major platforms go under or you lose you account somehow I think having your community exposed to your website is pretty clutch so people will know where to find you.

Having multiple social media accounts (Instagram, YouTube, TikTok) is good but I just feel better knowing that I own something. and that’s exactly what a website is. There is no real “security” to being online but I think it’s the closest thing we’ll have.

Step One

Choose a Name

Select a Domain on Hostgator Dylankyang | The Complete Beginner's Guide on How to Build a Website in 4 Simple Steps

How to pick the perfect name that sticks for your website

A domain is the address people type in your browser to come see your site. There are plentiful website that sell domains, so the most difficult part is choosing a name. If you’re having difficulty coming up with a domain name, here’s an easy starting point:

  • If you’re making a website for your business, your domain name should match your company name. For example: YourCompanyName.com
  • If you’re coming from a social media platform yourusername.com is also a great option
  • If you’re planning to set up a website or blog for yourself, then YourName.com is a solution (as you can see with mine lol)
Domain names usually end with .com, .org or .net, but over time a huge amount of domain extensions have come out, ranging from .agency, .online to .pizza.

Best Advice? The weird endings are fine if it makes sense with your business but if you can come up with a name that ends in .com that would be the most ideal.
I like to use Hostgator because they give you recommendations
but another tool for researh is: Instantdomainsearch.com

Step Two

Setup A Hosting Plan

Setup a service plan that connects your website to the internet

A website is nothing more than a collection of files. Every image, text and blog post is a file. Basically anything associated with your website is a file of sorts, and they’ll need to be stored somewhere. That’s where these hosting providers come in. Think of it like paying rent for your storefront, hosting providers essentially make it so that people can access your site through the internet.

There are many companies that offer hosting plans for relatively low costs but I personally recommend Siteground. They have become my favourite because they’re really affordable, have good customer service, and ensure that your site is speedy and secure.

Step Three: Install WordPress

WordPress is a powerful, popular and extremely customizable platform.

Almost a third of all websites are built on WordPress. It’s a subtle, essential part of the internet. WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS) which basically just means it’s a program that allows you to create and organize digital content.

We’ll be installing WordPress onto your hosting plan to build your website for this tutorial. Because of its popularity on the web installing it is pretty easy. Most hosting plans should offer similar options but my favourite has been SiteGround.

Once you’ve purchased your hosting plan. When you open your Siteground customer area for the first time, you’ll receive a pop-up asking if you want to start a new website.

Select WordPress and then it should proceed to “Installation Details”. Where it’s pretty self-explanatory. But all you got to do is put in your email address and a password!

Once you’ve done this you’re good to go! And just wait as WordPress installs your new website!

Step Four: Design Your Website

WordPress is a powerful, popular and extremely customizable platform.

Honestly you’re pretty much good at this point. Anything after this point is usually just where people are just pushing affiliate links. While the rest of what I provide are, I don’t get paid out for the free things but that won’t stop me from recommending them.

Trust I know the struggle when you’re broke (I’m still there) so save your money where you can. For the longest time I have never used the paid version and only have once I started a design business so you do not need to spend more money if you don’t need to.

With Elementor Page Builder you’re pretty much good with any theme. I personally enjoy the OceanWP Theme because it’s very customizable and you can design pretty much anything you can imagine.

Another great option that I have affiliate links in is the Hestia theme. It has great support with Elementor and you’ll be able to design anything you can imagine.

This is what an Elementor Page builder looks like and it’s actually really fun to use since it’s a drag and drop function similar to other site-builders like Wix, Shopify, etc. But this way you don’t need to spend money on premium plugins just to get some functions that WordPress will usually offer for free.

Congratulations!!!

Enjoy your new customized WordPress website!

I hope this helped. I’ve always wanted to film this into a video but haven’t figure out how to show what’s important so if you guys have any questions this will be extremely helpful to make sure that I can give you guys the best information!
