The Pinterest Epiphany

E-pin-phany: The Hidden Power of Pinterest

Rachel and I knew from time that Pinterest was a great source for traffic. Why? Cause we use it like almost every day (searching how-to’s, traveling, diy, arts, crafts, inspo, literally for everything). But it wasn’t till after we heard Meagan Williamson talk about it, that all the gears started to click together! Meagan was using Pinterest to drive traffic to her blog, businesses and more! And her secret was this: Tailwind!

Tailwind is literally magic. It helps you schedule and automate your pins, and publish them at the most optimal times (they just started another subscription program for Instagram too! <— I’m currently using Tailwind for Instagram on At first, I didn’t think much of it cause I thought I was doing the same thing by programming something to put make my posts live through IFTTT, but MANNNNNN was this a game changer. Tailwind is a Pinterest and Instagram partner that uses an awesome algorithm (called Smart Loops) that truly picks the best times to post your content. I went from like a few hundred views on my Pinterest account to currently over 300,000 views a month*!!! That’s crazy, I mean I’m not a professional blogger or anything, but those numbers to me are incredible!

*These are my personal results, but Tailwind also publishes the Typical Results of Tailwind Members every year, so you can see exactly what the average growth rate looks like for their Pinterest or Instagram members.

So how do we get to this? What does it mean and where do I sign up?
Lol well, we’ll get into it. But with all the hype of internet gurus and weird tings like that I feel like I need to cover some basics/fundamentals so that you’re not pulled into some get-rich-quick scheme. So please note this!

Everything good will take time to build but with hard work and dedication it will pay off. Hopefully I can write well enough to show you what I did step by step so you can replicate it too! Also if you have any questions, feel free to send me a DM or comment down below. Nonetheless,

Let’s get it 💪!

Why Pinterest

Pinterest is an Image Based Search Engine

So first off, I think the most important thing for you to grasp is why Pinterest and why Tailwind. And the best way to figure that out is ask: what’s your end goal? If you’re answer is to grow your blog/business/etc. Then we’re in luck.

Pinterest is great because it’s essentially your untapped search engine (I mean it’s not really untapped but it’s the first word I thought of. It’s like the early stages of Google search but based off of images.). Being able to tap into this search engine can give you an advantage like google did for blogs when they first “blew up”. So, here’s to hoping we can learn from the pasy and repeat success for ourselves now.

Plus I like Pinterest better, but we’ll save that discussion for another time.

The Answer: Traffic

Basically what all those words mean is that Pinterest is a great place to draw in traffic. And what Tailwind does is helps you keep a constant presence on Pinterest. So hand in hand you’re creating a constant online presence for an incredible search engine. As a result, we should be able to draw great traffic to your website!

Measuring Success on Pinterest

Traffic is blessed and all but how do we know if what we’re doing is right? We’ll I mean nobody will ever know, but that’s why we set goals for ourselves. For myself I just thoroughly enjoy using Pinterest to gather ideas and like to know if others like what I like too. So for me I like looking at the repins Lol, it’s like a small spark of validation when people are pinning the same things.

But if you’re more of the analytical type of person and don’t really care much about that kind of ROI (emotional return). Your goal is to gain “a snowball effect” on Pinterest. You will want to build up enough steam behind one of your pins, so it can have a higher possibility to get repined by multiple people, allowing it to grow exponentially. The key measurement to see that growth is: views.

Analytical Answer: Views over followers

Views are the most important factor to measure on Pinterest because views can lead to; more re-pins or more clicks equating to more traffic to your site. And all those leads, lead to more possibilities, for people to do whatever call to action on your website is. So, even if you have a very small number of followers on Pinterest, it doesn’t really matter. If you treat it less like a social media account and more like a search engine than you should be good to go!

Treat Pinterest like a search engine over social media and you’ll be golden

– Quoted for emphasis lol

I feel like that’s all the theory you need to know. Personally, I’m impatient and I feel bad for making you read this much theory already, I would just want to see the stuff in action. But if there’s any more information y’all wanna know about feel free to hit me up :D!

How I Use Pinterest

There’s not really a right or wrong way to use Pinterest. It’s literally just a search engine but I love that everything is catered and organized visually. It’s awesome because I use it as the modern version of magazine cut-outs.

The Answer: It's Gotta "Feel" Right

I have separate boards, pins and whatnot for all different aspects of my life. Some of the boards that I’ve created are: of things I like (snearkers, tech), inspirational boards to help guide web design clients (Site Ideas | E-Commerce, Blog, Services, Etc.) or guide/recipes/inspiration for myself (Apartment Ideas, Vegetarian Recipes, DIY Crafts, etc.)

If it sparks your personality and it “feels” like you, you’re doing it well.

Analytical Answer: Organize and Link

But if you’re an analytical type person and not sure what that means, don’t worry! The best approach is to understand the hierarchy first.

  • Pinterest: It’s just a search engine (think Google) but it organizes content from images rather than just wall of text.
  • Your Personal Account: Kinda like a blog, website or like a curated store of all your interests/projects.

Then from that, you create this system for basically all your ideas/interest. The system contains 2-3 levels.

  • Board: What your main topic is.
  • Sub-Board: Further categorizing options. But I’ve stopped using this (DM me if you wanna know why)
  • Pins: The image we’re using as an idea, post, project etc.

This is where the money making clicked into my head because the image links to a website. And that’s what can connect traffic to your website. I mean it’s obvious to know but I was completely mind blown at the time (Comment down below if you understand lol).

Your Pinterest To-do List
  • Create a Pinterest Account
  • Change your profile to a Pinterest Business Account
  • Claim your website and socials
  • Link it to your Google Analytics
  • Use Pinterest like a normal person
      • Pinterest is an awesome platform to use. Get to know it intimately and create boards that interest you! When you spice it up with your flavour and personality that’s the best way to make it grow organically.

How I use Tailwind!

Like I said Tailwind is literally magic and they just keep adding more and more fairy dust. This is such an incredible tool that has so many features but because of that, it’s really easy to get lost in all sauuucceee. To mention some really good features that I should cover later on are: Smart Loops, Tribes, Board Lists, etc. But because I like to take it as I understand it we’re gonna go slow. This way we’ll be able to maximize the efficiency of each tool!

The Answer: Bring that right "feelin" to Tailwind

I think the main reason why I mentioned how to use Pinterest as a normal person. Was to emphasize it in how I just like to use tailwind to helps maintain your presence online. There is no difference in how I interact with Pinterest and Tailwind other than the fact that I’m using Tailwinds scheduling to help optimize my pins. I think that’s the key factor and what makes the subscription “worth it”.

I think my thought process or perspective of all these “online business models” whether it be YouTube, Instagram, Blogging is that it must be done out of passion rather than chasing a dollar bill. I like the organic aspect of it all and that’s why I highly recommend moving based on your “feelings”.

Analytical Answer: Think, Imagine and Replicate

But I understand that emotions and feelings aren’t the easiest to express so I’ll try to break it down for the logistics. And I think the best way to do that is to highlight the benefits of each tool.

Tailwind Features I Use Regularly

Tailwind's SmartSchedule

Tailwind has created an algorithm to figure out the best times for you to post. It’ll automate the posts for you so that it will gain the highest reach/views. It’s kind of like setting up a lemonade stand at the end of a marathon rather than randomly placed in the city.

This is what I believe makes Tailwind “worth it” and would highly recommend you to try just to see how big of an effect it can make on your account.

The ultimate beginners guide to grow your blog | Dylankyang

If everything else goes over your head just learn to use your Smart Schedule and you’ll do well.

Tailwind's Smartloop

Kinda like smart scheduling but it’s for specific boards or posts that you’re likely to repin again. When Meagan brought this up the first thing I thought about were things like:

  • Best Father’s Day Gifts
  • Back to school tech every student needs
  • The Universal Undergrad Winter Outfit
  • Freelancer Survival Kit

So I suppose basically anything seasonal would be amazing for the Smartloops. It helps you recycle old posts at relevant times or keep your heavy hitter posts continuously hitting.

Additional Tingz

Tailwind Tribes

A group of like-minded people on tailwind that shares high-quality content with each other. This is a great thing because it helps you receive a never-ending stream of content that you’re interested in and you basically have a squad that you can grow with!

I personally don’t use this often but have noticed there are surges of traffic in posts that I have shared within the groups. You get 5 memberships with an annual subscription but you can always purchase more with “PowerUps”.

Benchmarks and Analysis

If you’ve managed to read this far you definitely enjoy seeing the analytical side of things so seeing Tailwind’s breakdowns will have you ecstatic. Tailwind’s insight has reports that help you analyze your profile, board and pin performance. It helps you break down the traffic and lets you see where the majority comes from.

The Tailwind To-do List

      • Pinterest is an awesome platform to use. Get to know it intimately and create boards that interest you! When you spice it up with your flavour and personality that’s the best way to make it grow organically.

The ultimate beginners guide to grow your blog | Dylankyang
Last night we came back from a seminar with this super awesome lady: Meagan Williamson. She’s a blogger entrepreneur turned to Pinterest consultant because of how great she is at it. And honestly this talked opened my eyes to the possibilities of Pinterest.
Some of Dylankyang's Pinterest Board that have driven traffic: Planner Inspo It’s one of the few platforms where content can actually survive longer than a day. And I never really understood where any of my blog traffic came from but now it all makes sense. I kind of just always just let IFTTT automate posting on Pinterest because I like to visually see how much I’ve actually written and now I realized it actually helps me grow my traffic! So nonetheless here are the tips that I can remember: plants growing in a pot to resemble Pinterest growth

Growing Your Business With Pinterest

Pinterest is often compared to other social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) [Heck I even just did that in the intro paragraph]. But in reality, it’s more of a competitor to Google than anything social media related. I remember reading in my undergrad it has one of the most complex search algorithms that rival Google! So there are amazing benefits of using Pinterest to help you drive traffic to your business (whether it be blogs, affiliate links, etc)

Benefits of Pinterest

  • Reach isn’t dependent on followers
  • Linking to Google Analytics helps you determine how traffic is redirected
  • Keywords have a hierarchy: Title > Description > Categories
    • When writing keep in mind:
      • Trendy, Seasonal (Buzzfeed like)
  • Pinterest usually publishes trend reports and because of the longer shelf life of content, it is ideal to publish 3 months ahead of trends
  • Short sentences in descriptions help pull user attention and later helps the algorithm sort your content
  • There are multiple plugins that can help you sort, organize, analyze and schedule your posts
    • Tailwind Plugin (Scheduling)
    • Tribe (Community)
    • Tasty (Determine Alt Text)

GIF of Ronaldinho saying calm down to resemble the benefit of being real on Pinterest

Side Note of Organic Pinterest

What’s nice is that Meagan highlights that Pinterest favors organic users. And that’s what I love about companies that think about these things. While I understand the approach, I’m not really fond of how “influencers” really focus on a calculated approach to creating “content”. It just feels so fake to me. I mean some people do it pretty well but I’m glad to know there are other people in the industry that don’t believe you need to take that approach to be successful. I think that’s all I’m trying to say. Nonetheless more notes:

Your Content can have Multiple Posts on Pinterest Boards

  • You can link to the same post multiple times
    • Think of different pictures, products, overlay text images (BuzzFeed captions)
    • This is a great way to promote your affiliate links as well!
    • This technique has allowed her to show clients growth within 30 days
      • Common font used: Babis Neue
  • If you keep in mind while creating content that Pinterest can help create content it makes things so much easier
  • The most important pins are your first 15 every day.
    • The most likely to be promoted of those are your first 5
    • Best times to post are evenings and weekends (7pm-11pm)
  • Images help Pinterest organize your content
    • Ideal size: 600 px by 900 px (2:3)
    • Next: 600 px by 600 px (1:1)
    • No larger than: 600 px by 1260 px
  • Remember that there are many varieties of users and they all have different preferences so when creating images you can think of people that like:
    • Text overlays, collages, product displays, graphics, artistic views, etc.
    • Also apparently hashtags work (use like 5-10) similar to how Instagram works
My notes Notes I took during this seminar

Basically, I’m Stoked about Pinterest

Honestly, I’m just so blown away by how I didn’t see that you could use Pinterest in this way. I’m in shock because I’ve always done it but never with intention so now that I can add that extra oomph I think this blog can actually grow and maybe gain some traffic. I might actually become an “influencer” and create content for a living! It’s crazy because I feel like I can taste it, I feel like I’m right there. We just gotta keep writing and see what happens. 🙂 Good Luck and see you in the next one! How to grow on Pinterest
