When you don’t have enough time…

From writing the last post it brought back to memory a TED talk I recently watched about time management. Now I’ve been been a time-management info fiend since I can remember, and yes your read that right. ONLY info-fiend, so I’m not the greatest at time-management but I love reading everything about it. Which means I’m not a time management guru, but just another dude that likes to read stuff. It’s only after finishing my undergrad that I was able to attempt to implement everything I’ve read and maybe just maybe I’ll get better at it.

Anyways back to when you don’t have time. This video struck a chord with me because it’s been something that I’ve always believed but haven’t been able to put it into words:

“It’s not that you don’t have enough time, it’s that, it’s not a priority”

Yes that statement is harsh but it’s to drive the point home that you should be putting your priorities first. What is important to you? What needs to be done at all costs? What are your non-negotiables? When you truly want something you won’t stop till you get it. You can’t just kinda want something. You need to want it as bad as you want to breathe*.

Action Items:

Alright so what now. How are you supposed to know what you want? Or if you do know what you want, wanting it isn’t enough you need to do something about it. What can you do about it? What are your next steps? What can you do now to bring you closer? This is where finding your life passion, year goals and weekly execution comes in (My detailed post is soon to come). But just so we can drive the point home and get you to do something about it now. Well use just yearly goals to run for your passion and to get there you need to follw these next three action items:

ACTION ITEMS

How to make the most of our time:

  • At the end of this year what 3-5 things will you have wanted to accomplished?
  • Take these goals and break them into little steps
  • Put it into your schedule first!

EXAMPLE

Run a 5K Marathon

  • Find a race and sign-up for it
  • Commit to a plan and/or trainer
  • And Last but not least

“Put it into your schedule first!”

This is to show yourself what you want to do and the steps on how to do it. It proves to you that we can build the live we want in the time we’ve got. This is what you truly want and the only thing holding you back is yourself.

Go on,

get up, and

go do it!

What are you going to make your priority and what are you gonna do about it?
*Yes this was a reference to my favourite Eric Thomas’s famous video. (Watch it here)

Memorable Quotes

  • We don’t build the lives we want by saving, we build the lives we want and then time saves itself
  • Time is highly elastic, we cannot make more time. But time will stretch to accommodate what we choose to put into it
  • Everything you do is your choice,
  • There are 168 hours in a week, 56 allocated to sleep and 50 to full time
    • 62 hours to bring you closer to the good stuff

Gain Control of Your Time by:

  • Knowing there is ALWAYS time for the important stuff
  • It’s not that you don’t have time, it’s that it’s not a high enough priority (AKA: you don’t want to)
  • By scheduling our priorities first we can build the lives we want in the time we’ve got

Note: Find your priorities by doing the Action Items (3 Things)
